Problem for Farmers

Majority of farmers in Africa (Ghana) are smallholder farmers who lack basic inputs and services such as market information, mechanization services, access to; credit, inputs, improved seeds and market linkages. These leads to declined agric-productivity, food insecurity and underdevelopment of agriculture posing a threat to economic development of African nations.


Solution for Farmers: SmartFarmer Farm Support Services (SFSS)

SmartFarmer Support Services is a system under SmartFarmer, aimed to build the capacity of farmers, by improving the quality of agricultural services, enhancing value addition, granting market access and improving flow of farming inputs needed to farmers. The objective of SFSS is to provide farmers with support, enabling farmers even do more in their activities of food & commodity production from Africa: SDG 1, 2, 8 & 12 An Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code *800*5000# has been introduced starting in Ghana. A simplified way for farmers to subscribe to SFSS even without internet access for benefits such as:Finance, Extension, Market access and Input supply (FEMI).

SFSS- Financing (F)

Credit between ($200 - $2,000) will be issued to new or existing farmers subscribed to the SFSS to enhance the production and marketing of their farm produce. Farmers will use this credit to facilitate purchase of seasonal farm inputs (seeds, fertilizer, feed etc.) to boost their productivity to enable increased farming yields and expansion of their operations. Finance provided to farmers will be paid back to SmartFarmer through a system of marketing and sales of farm produce between the farmer & SmartFarmer.

SFSS-Extension Service (E)

SmartFarmer is providing extension services to farmers via 2 ways.

  • Tele-Agric where a subscribed Farmer can easily dial up for effective and quick-responds tailored extension service with just a phone call at any time of need.
  • SmartFarmer extension experts will periodically also visit farmers, and also upon farmer’s request; to disseminate new and improved farming practices, new innovations and to solve farmers technical challenges (pests, diseases, weed control & high mortality rates for livestock, etc).

SFSS-Marketing (M)

Subscribed farmers of SFFS will be linked to buyers for good sale of their produce/products. Farmers subscribed to SFSS in the rural areas will be linked directly to urban markets with little or no transportation cost as SmartFarmer will also market to sell farmers produce/products to consumers, shops, organizations under SmartFarmers market system.

SFSS-Inputs (I)

SmartFarmer extension officers will also facilitate for inputs supply for subscribed farmers and connects farmers for trainings and discussion sessions for Farming groups/associations.
